‘Honey Badger’ Nick Cummins rescues sheep in trouble

Former Wallaby Nick Cummins showed he is a man of many talents by rescuing a sheep in distress.

Nick Cummins was with his family at a Melbourne playground on the weekend when disaster struck and he jumped into action.
The 38-year-old affectionately known as the Honey Badger was in the right place at the right time on Saturday morning when a 3-year-old girl started choking.
The former rugby union star and father-of-three noticed the little girl choking at the Lower Eltham Playground in Melbourne’s north.
The girl’s family detailed the frightening incident on Tuesday morning, but at the time they were unaware of Cummins’ celebrity status.
“I wanted to thank the man who saved my granddaughter’s life on Saturday 4th October at the Lower Eltham Playground,” the girl’s grandmother Robyn wrote in a local Facebook group.

“It was her 3rd birthday and my daughter (her mother) was there preparing for the family to arrive.
“Maddy started choking on a soft lolly and my daughter was beside herself trying to apply first aid to no avail.
“Then a ‘big strong young bloke’ appeared from nowhere, and after a couple of unsuccessful attempts held Maddy upside down applying a couple of extra strong thumps which successfully dislodged it from her trachea.
“God bless you, whoever you are, and we will all be forever grateful to you — each year we will remember you.”

A young woman who was there and witnessed the ordeal revealed that Cummins was the unnamed hero.
“I was there at the park with my daughters at the time,” she wrote.

“Both your daughter and granddaughter were extremely brave during and after this very scary ordeal. I’m not sure if he would want to be named or not, but since he so readily jumped in to help and I’m sure he would be grateful for the thanks; the man who saved her was Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins.
“I’m so glad your granddaughter is doing well and happily played and enjoyed her party afterwards.”
She said Cummins was at the playground “with his kids and some friends”.
News.com.au has reached out to Cummins for comment. His management confirmed that he was there and that he did give assistance.
Locals have reacted to his act of heroism with high praise.
“There are good humans out there who just act when needed,” one wrote.
“Last clip I saw of him he was saving a lamb stuck in a fence, roadside. What a legit top bloke he is,” another wrote.
Cummins is no stranger to lifesaving acts. In September, 2021, he came across a sheep that had become caught in a barbed-wire fence.
The video of him freeing the animal and lifting it over a fence to freedom went viral.
The then-33-year-old had tried to wrangle the sheep’s head through a gap in the wire. Once free, he grabbed it by the front and back legs and hoisted it over.

“Usually they go into a hypnotised state when you have them like this,” he said while holding it off the ground. As it was released, he joked: “You’re welcome.”
Cummins played 15 Tests for the Wallabies and represented the Western Force 87 times in Super Rugby. After finishing his professional rugby career, he starred in the 2018 season of The Bachelor.
He settled down with his partner Alexandra George and the pair welcomed their third child at the beginning of the year.
“Our little baby girl arrived last week and we couldn’t be happier … she’s an absolute treasure. Three under two and a half and life couldn’t be better/busier,” she captioned pictures of the happy couple and their newborn baby girl in March.
After the birth of their first child, she wrote: “Watching Nick hold our son on his first father’s Day was such a surreal moment, you’re a wonderful Dad already. So blessed to share my life with both of you.”

The pair sold up their Broadbeach Waters home in 2020 and moved to a sprawling $3 million Hinterland home where they are raising their family.
“I’ve decided to live the country life and therefore I will sadly have to let go of this beautiful home,” Cummins shared with followers.
