HMRC has warned it will start issuing fines to UK households who miss an important deadline on Sunday. The latest deadline to register for self-assessments will pass on October 5. Self-employed people, those who earned over £1,000 in untaxed income in the last tax year and certain others will need to ensure they don’t miss the deadline. Those who miss deadlines face initial £100 fines before further penalties the longer they go without addressing it. Households who have to file assessments could include those making extra cash from online side hustles, if they have passed the £1,000 threshold. Jamie Lewis, CEO of Binq, said: “This Sunday marks the deadline for self-assessment registrations, and a date you can’t afford to miss is you’ve started a business, became self-employed, or earned over £1,000 from untaxed income between April 2024 and April 2025. “This includes sole traders, freelancers, landlords with rental income, and anyone with side hustles or online trading income. “If you owe tax and HMRC thinks you’re deliberately evading payment, you could be fined 30% to 100% of what’s owed plus interest from the date it was due. “Running a business is hard enough without adding HMRC penalties and stress to the it all, so check the government website to see if you need to register, or use their form to find out if you need to send a Self-Assessment tax return. “That way you can focus on growing your business, and not fighting penalties.” Join our Free Money Saving WhatsApp community for the latest updates
