Rabat: His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, accompanied by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, presided today over the inauguration of the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex in Rabat, an international benchmark facility aimed at providing high-quality healthcare services nationwide, accessible to all, while offering top-level training in health professions. On this occasion, His Majesty also gave His High Instructions for the opening of the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir, a medical hub of excellence that will bring about a qualitative leap in healthcare services and medical training in the Souss-Massa region. Built by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health, the Rabat complex represents a new generation of modern and smart hospital infrastructure, embodying His Majesty’s enlightened vision and His commitment to the well-being of citizens. It reflects the ambition to ensure equitable access to next-generation healthcare services through an institution that integrates the latest medical innovations, supported by a leading academic and research structure. Erected over 280,000 m², the complex comprises two main entities: The Mohammed VI International University Hospital of Rabat (190,000 m²) The Mohammed VI University of Health and Science of Rabat (90,000 m²). A new-generation institution placing the patient at its core The hospital, with an initial capacity of 600 beds expandable to 1,000, includes over 30 centers of excellence covering specialties such as robotic surgery, neurosurgery, interventional cardiology, oncology, radiotherapy, and precision medical imaging. It features 24 state-of-the-art operating rooms (19 within an integrated surgical unit of 3,400 m²), 143 critical care beds (including 30 neonatal incubators), and high-tech equipment such as the first PET-MRI scanner in Morocco and Africa, a 3 Tesla Omega MRI, a radiotherapy system, a robotized hospital pharmacy, and a simulation center. The hospital also includes a unit for severe burn treatment, a hyperbaric and hypobaric oxygen therapy service (unique in Morocco), and the first fully automated laboratory platform in Africa. It also hosts Morocco’s first digital pathology laboratory. Patient-centered, the hospital offers integrated and personalized care pathways ensuring comfort, safety, and quality. It also serves as a training platform for students of the Mohammed VI University of Health and Science. The university, with 15 amphitheaters (4,000 seats) and facilities capable of accommodating 8,000 students, includes several faculties and schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary sciences, biomedical engineering, and nursing. Committed to sustainability, the complex obtained the HQE “Excellent” environmental certification and integrates 8,800 m² of photovoltaic panels, covering over 10% of its energy needs and reducing carbon emissions by 40%. The Mohammed VI University Hospital of Agadir: A true symbol of modernization The Mohammed VI University Hospital of Agadir, covering 30 hectares (127,000 m² built) with an investment of 3.1 billion dirhams, offers 867 beds and includes various medical hubs (mother-child, surgery, radiology, cardiology, etc.), a central operating block with 19 theaters, emergency and burn units, laboratories, and a robotized central pharmacy. As the first hospital in Africa to integrate 3D robotic surgery technology, it represents a breakthrough in medical practice. Its cardiology unit includes two catheterization rooms and intensive care units equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring systems. The hospital is also equipped with a complete sterilization center and a robotized drug distribution system, ensuring maximum patient safety. Serving nearly 3 million people, the Agadir hospital will enhance the healthcare infrastructure of the Souss-Massa region, bring advanced medical services closer to citizens, and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, thus contributing to regional and national socio-economic development.
