Gopichand P Hinduja, chairman of the Hinduja Group and one of Britain’s richest businessmen, has died in London at 85, reported PTI. He affectionately called “GP” in global business circles. Hinduja had been unwell for several weeks and passed away in a London hospital, according to sources. Hinduja Group chairman dies at 85 He survived by his wife, Sunita; sons, Sanjay and Dheeraj; and daughter, Rita. Hinduja represented the second generation of his influential business family. He took over the multinational Hinduja Group in May 2023 after the death of his older brother, Srichand P Hinduja. A lifetime of business leadership Born into a traditional business family before India’s independence, Gopichand Hinduja began his professional journey in 1959 when he joined the family business in Mumbai. Over the decades, he played a key role in changing what was once an Indo-Middle East trading business into a global industrial group with a presence in more than 30 countries. Under his leadership, the Hinduja Group expanded into several sectors, including banking, finance, energy, automotive, media, and infrastructure. Two of its most significant acquisitions happened during his time — Gulf Oil in 1984 and Ashok Leyland in 1987, the latter being one of the first major investments by non-resident Indians in India.
