The Board of Education presented Michael Volpe with a proclamation as a "symbol of our deep respect and admiration." HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — The Board of Education(BOE) honored Hillsborough Superintendent Michael Volpe with a proclamation for his "outstanding commitment and excellence in prioritizing the safety and security of all students and staff." Board President Paul Marini read the proclamation at the Oct. 27 BOE meeting. The proclamation comes after the National Association of School Superintendents (NASS) named Volpe as the 2025 national winner of the NASS "Excellence in Safety and Security" award. "This esteemed national award underscores Mr. Volpe's vision for a secure educational environment, his commitment to student well-being, and his exceptional ability to implement proactive and effective security protocols," according to the proclamation. The BOE extended "its warmest congratulations and profound appreciation to Michael J. Volpe for his outstanding achievement in receiving the National Association of School Superintendents 2025 Excellence Award for School Safety and Security." Volpe, who was unaware of the proclamation, said that he really appreciated the board's recognition. "School safety and security is everybody's job, so I want to thank every single staff member who has heightened their awareness and made sure things are the way they are supposed to be," said Volpe. He went on to thank the security staff at the district, including Coordinator of School Security Operations David Stokoe, and Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Technology Joel Handler. "This was unnecessary but very much appreciated," said Volpe. "And I will continue to do the very best for Hillsborough." Have a news tip? Email alexis.tarrazi@patch.com.
