CLEVELAND, Ohio — The top 19 teams in last week’s cleveland.com high school football Top 25 maintained their standing with victories, but the race to No. 1 could have tightened with St. Edward’s convincing 35-10 win Saturday against Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller. With one week to go in the regular season, the Eagles travel to Archbishop Hoban on Friday in a matchup of teams ranked in the top four in Northeast Ohio. No. 1 Avon faces winless Elyria, while No. 5 Walsh Jesuit kicks off Week 10 on Thursday night against Trotwood-Madison. Uniontown Lake (7-2) Last week: Not ranked, beat North Canton Hoover 20-14 This week: Friday at Green The Blue Streaks return to the Top 25 and send Hoover out of the it, bouncing back from a two-game skid. Both of their losses were by three points to Massillon Jackson and Canton McKinley. 24. Perry (7-2) Last week: Not ranked, won at West Geauga 35-21 This week: Friday at Hawken Coming off last season’s run to the Division IV regional finals, Perry is playing for the Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division title this week at Hawken. The Pirates are second in Region 13 with a chance to wrap up a first-round bye. 23. North Ridgeville (8-1) Last week: Ranked No. 25, beat Amherst 42-28 This week: Friday at Olmsted Falls Cole Miller continues to steer the Rangers as a dual threat quarterback. His five-touchdown game against Amherst has North Ridgeville in position for a first-round bye in Division II, Region 6 with heavyweights Avon, Wadsworth and Highland. 22. Buckeye (9-0) Last week: Ranked No. 24, won at Rocky River 35-27 This week: Friday vs. Lakewood Buckeye rushed for 404 yards and clinched its second straight Cleveland West Conference championship against Rocky River. The Bucks clinched a first-round bye, according to JoeEitel.com, in Division III. They are the top seed in Region 10. 21. Lake Catholic (7-2) Last week: Ranked No. 22, beat Holy Name 35-14 This week: Saturday vs. Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin The Cougars have won three straight games since their lone loss to North Coast Conference frontrunner Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. They are fifth in Division IV, Region 13, chasing a first-round bye. 20. Norton (8-0) Last week: Ranked No. 21, beat Akron Springfield 61-0 This week: Friday at Coventry Coach Glen Kruger’s Panthers should not have to worry about fending off anyone for a first-round bye in Region 13. They are firmly in first place of that region and have clinched the Metro Athletic Conference title. 19. Villa Angela-St. Joseph (7-1) Last week: Ranked No. 19, won at Benedictine 33-22 This week: Friday vs. Delaware Hayes The Vikings got a big boost from their win against Benedictine and are now in prime position for a first-round bye in Division III, Region 9. They have won six straight games since their lone loss at Youngstown Cardinal Mooney. 18. Olmsted Falls (6-3) Last week: Ranked No. 18, won at Midview 42-7 This week: Friday vs. North Ridgeville Owen Singleton scored three touchdowns, including two rushing scores with 73 yards at Midview. The Bulldogs are doing their best to make that two-game losing streak in September a distant memory. They have won three in a row and have clinched a top eight spot, according to JoeEitel.com, good for at least a first-round home game in Division II, Region 6. 17. Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (7-2) Last week: Ranked No. 17, won at Canfield South Range 38-30 This week: Idle Mooney has wrapped up a first-round bye in Division V, Region 17, according to JoeEitel.com. The Cardinals are off this week because they were scheduled to play Youngstown Ursuline before the Fighting Irish canceled their season. 16. Canfield (9-0) Last week: Ranked No. 16, won at Warren Howland 44-3 This week: Friday at Boardman If Canfield can complete an undefeated regular season, it should be the top seed in Division III, Region 9. 15. Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (8-0) Last week: Ranked No. 15, won at Padua 42-7 This week: Friday vs. Elyria Catholic The Royals have remained dominant. Not only are they undefeated, they have given up just 14 points in the last three weeks to clinch the North Coast Conference title. They yielded just 104 yards at Padua. 14. Austintown Fitch (7-1) Last week: Ranked No. 14, won at Boardman 31-14 This week: Friday at Warren Harding Fitch has won seven straight since a season-opening misstep at Hudson. The Falcons could have a first-round bye in Division II, Region 5. 13. Hudson (7-2) Last week: Ranked No. 13, beat Nordonia 42-35 (2OT) This week: Friday at North Royalton The thriller of Week 9 belonged to Hudson and Nordonia, as the Knights went up in the final minute on Steven Fakult’s 42-yard touchdown pass to Dominick Jackson, before Hayden Lipinski and Louie Castellarin answered with a 71-yard score to force overtime. 12. Strongsville (7-2) Last week: Ranked No. 12, beat Shaker Heights 17-0 This week: Friday at Brunswick Strongsville will be at home for the second straight year to start the Division I playoffs. Previously, it had not hosted a playoff game — or won one — since 2008. Second-year coach Jason Trusnik has molded the Mustangs into a contender. 11. Massillon (6-3) Last week: Ranked No. 11, beat Warren Harding 42-10 This week: Saturday at Canton McKinley Massillon should return home for Week 11 and maybe earn a bye in Division II, Region 7, regardless of what happens Saturday at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. 10. Canton McKinley (8-1) Last week: Ranked No. 10, won at Massillon Jackson 40-9 This week: Saturday vs. Massillon The Bulldogs wrapped up the Federal League and have clinched a first-round bye in Division I, Region 1, according to JoeEitel.com. They briefly sat atop Region 1 on Saturday until St. Edward’s big win against Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller. 9. Kirtland (9-0) Last week: Ranked No. 9, beat Crestwood 40-0 This week: Friday at Rootstown Kirtland looks poised for another run at the Division VI state finals, even while winning its last two games without senior quarterback Jake LaVerde. The Hornets clinched the top overall seed in Region 21. 8. Highland (9-0) Last week: Ranked No. 8, won at Revere 49-7 This week: Friday vs. Cuyahoga Falls Casey Myser set the Medina County career record for rushing touchdowns, and the Hornets clinched their second straight Suburban League American Conference title with a dominant performance against Revere. They have not given up more than 10 points in any game all year. Myser rushed for 101 yards and two TDs, giving him 74 rushing scores in his career. He eclipsed Black River’s Andrew Vaughn, who had 72, according to the Medina Gazette. 7. Wadsworth (9-0) Last week: Ranked No. 7, beat Stow-Munroe Falls 50-20 This week: Friday at Solon Perhaps, the Suburban League champions will meet in the Division II, Region 6 playoffs. Both Wadsworth and Highland are in the top three with defending state champion Avon. Cooper Gray rushed for 179 yards and three TDs, while Gavin Madigan had 132 yards and two scores in their win against Stow. 6. Glenville (5-3) Last week: Ranked No. 6, beat John Hay 41-0 This week: Friday vs. Rhodes Glenville bounced back from its 12-9 loss at Archbishop Hoban with a convincing Senate League win at Bump Taylor Field. They will return there Friday afternoon against Rhodes (6-2), looking to clinch another city title. Glenville has won 173 straight Senate games. 5. Walsh Jesuit (7-1) Last week: Ranked No. 5, won at St. Vincent-St. Mary 51-7 This week: Thursday vs. Trotwood-Madison Walsh might need a little help to secure a first-round bye in Division II, Region 5. This week’s visit from Trotwood (6-2) also could provide an opportunity to pick up playoff points after beating winless STVM. 4. Archbishop Hoban (7-1) Last week: Ranked No. 4, beat Central York (Pa.) 46-21 This week: Friday vs. St. Edward Payton Cook came to Hoban with the potential to play quarterback. Now a senior Louisville commit, Cook returned to his old position with the Knights’ three quarterbacks out because of injury and completed 8 of 11 passes for 103 yards. They stand atop Region 5, with their 19-14 win last month against Walsh as a big factor. The defense came up with a safety, and USC commit Elbert “Rock” Hill IV had the first interception of the season for Central York quarterback Brooklyn Nace. The visiting Panthers entered with an undefeated record and had not scored fewer than 50 points in a game — until their trip to Akron. 3. Mentor (9-0) Last week: Ranked No. 3, won at Lorain 38-6 This week: Friday vs. Euclid Brogan Jones threw for 182 yards and three TDs, including two to Justen Hodge, who had 137 yards on five receptions at Lorain. Jackson Farley added 107 yards rushing, and the Cardinals are now in position to repeat as Greater Cleveland Conference with a second straight 10-0 season. This time, they are looking up at St. Edward and Canton McKinley for the No. 1 overall seed in Division I, Region 1. 2. St. Edward (8-1) Last week: Ranked No. 2, beat Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller 35-10 This week: Friday at Archbishop Hoban Zach Hackleman’s four touchdowns made a statement for the Eagles’ Division I state-title hopes and should vault him into the Mr. Football discussion with his playmaking. St. Edward has won four straight games since its seven-point slipup at Massillon and has a case to be the area’s No. 1-ranked team. That should only strengthen, if the Eagles can beat Hoban. 1. Avon (8-1) Last week: Ranked No. 1, beat Avon Lake 43-12 This week: Friday at Elyria The defending Division II state champions clinched their 10th straight Southwestern Conference title. They will be the team to beat in Region 6, regardless of seed.
