Hideo Kojima announces Death Stranding: Mosquito – an animated film with Hollywood writers

Kojima Productions has announced Death Stranding: Mosquito, an animated film project that brings the acclaimed video game franchise to the big screen. The project represents a major collaboration between Hollywood and Japanese animation studios, with some serious talent attached to bring the surreal world to life.

Aaron Guzikowski, the writer behind Prisoners and HBO’s Raised by Wolves, is penning the script for the animated feature. Meanwhile, ABC Animation’s Hiroshi Miyamoto will direct the project. The film promises to chart a bold, original story within the Death Stranding universe rather than simply adapting the existing game narrative.

The timing couldn’t be better for the franchise expansion. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launched exclusively on PlayStation 5 this past June, adding Elle Fanning to the cast alongside returning stars Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen. The original Death Stranding has captivated over 20 million players worldwide since its 2019 release, blending cinematic storytelling with metaphysical themes that seem perfect for animation.

This isn’t Kojima’s only venture beyond gaming. The announcement comes alongside news of other Death Stranding projects, including a live-action film adaptation with A24 and a completely new action-espionage IP called Physint. There’s also OD, developed in partnership with Xbox Game Studios.

The animated film is being produced through a partnership between Kojima Productions, Line Mileage, and ABC Animation. Line Mileage brings experience from projects like Castlevania and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, while ABC Animation specializes in blending traditional Japanese line art with modern animation techniques.

With Death Stranding’s unique blend of science fiction, existential themes, and stunning visuals, the animated format could be the perfect medium to explore the franchise’s more abstract concepts. For fans of Kojima’s work, Death Stranding: Mosquito represents an exciting expansion of a world that’s already proven it can transcend traditional gaming boundaries.
