The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. across from the State House.
A candlelight vigil for Charlie Kirk will take place on the Boston Common on Thursday night.
The event will commemorate the political activist who was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.
As of Thursday morning, more than 1,400 people showed interest in the event posting on Facebook. At least 280 of those people indicated they would attend.
The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. near the Shaw Memorial in front of the State House. Boston police will block off Beacon Street and be present until the end of the vigil at 10 p.m.
The event organizer, Brian Foley, who recently lost a bid for Boston City Council, wrote on Facebook that Thursday “is not just another day for me — it is a day of remembrance.
“While Charlie Kirk didn’t play a direct hand in my personal road back into society, his words gave me strength in my weakest hours,” he continued. “That is why I’m holding this vigil. Not for politics, not for personal gain, but to honor a man whose voice carried across this country and reminded people like me that faith, grit, and conviction are stronger than despair.”
Mayor Michelle Wu told WCVB, “We are a city where everyone’s opinions matter. We’re a city that’s built on expressing your rights to free speech.”
Foley told WCVB, “I want to end the political violence. I’ve invited Democrats. I’ve invited Republicans.”
“Charlie would want us all to pick up his torch and carry on his mission,” the event page notes. “Even though many of us knew him through events and gatherings rather than formal friendships, he always fought for us no matter what.”
