The Trump administration said on Monday (September 08) that it had launched an immigration enforcement action in Chicago and other parts of Illinois dubbed “Operation Midway Blitz,” but the scope of the operation was unclear and the state’s Democratic governor said he was in the dark. Marcos Charles, the acting Executive Associate Director for ICE Enforcement Removal Operations, told Reuters on Monday (September 08) the ‘operational surge’ called ‘Operation Midway Blitz’ has so far been successful. “We have successfully arrested some criminal aliens over the last few days. We just began our surge. We’re going to be bringing in our partners, our other DHS partners, DOJ partners, CBP partners coming in,” Charles said. In a press release, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the operation was necessary because of city and state “sanctuary” laws that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
