“I was well qualified for a part-time job at a retail store. I wasn’t worried about what task the manager had in mind for me because I didn’t plan on staying long-term anyway.
I was in a group, and we were being walked through the hiring paperwork. I sign my signature with a smiley face behind my name in cursive — I have written my name that way since I became an adult. (It is even on my driver’s license and bank statements.) The store manager looked over my shoulder, grabbed my paperwork from me, and told me it would have to be redone because it was legal paperwork and needed to be taken seriously.
I gave her a ‘WTF’ face before grabbing the paperwork back from her and ripping it in two. I said something along the lines of, ‘That is my signature. It is clear this is a waste of both of our time.’ If she was going to micromanage my signature, there was no way I was going to be able to work under her as a manager. I collected my possessions and walked out.
No, no one clapped, but the room got really quiet, and I kept my dignity. Hopefully, that showed the other hire-ons how the boss was going to behave.”
