Help for smokers to quit the habit during Stoptober

The support, which includes access to free nicotine patches, gum, inhalators, vapes and prescribed medications, is being offered as part of Stoptober, the national quit smoking campaign which runs throughout the month.

While recent years have seen a decline, more than five million people in England still light up and smoking remains the largest cause of preventable illness and death.

Under this year’s theme, ‘Let’s Quit Smoking Together,’ Everyone Health Staffordshire and the county council’s public health team are ensuring everyone knows that help is available to them.

Former smoker Sharon Pinson said: “After 38 years of smoking, I thought it would be impossible to stop. I was offered different types of aids including nicotine replacement or medication and chose the medication route.

“At the start of my journey I couldn’t climb one flight of stairs without being breathless, but my fitness gradually started to improve. Quitting also helped me save £381, and using some of this I bought a bicycle and I’m now currently cycling 25k several times a week. Within 12 weeks my life has changed dramatically, I feel fitter, healthier and cleaner.”

Councillor Martin Rogerson, cabinet member for health and care at Staffordshire County Council, said: “Giving up smoking isn’t easy, but with the right help and support, it absolutely can be done.

“This year’s theme is all about showing people they’re not alone and that help is close at hand. If you can quit for 28 days, you’re five times more likely to quit for good. There’s never been a better time to give it a go.”

Laura Jay also quit smoking thanks to help from the Everyone Health Staffordshire stop smoking service. She said: “I found trying to quit on my own too hard and it was a lonely feeling. Having one-to-one support, talking to my practitioner and knowing they would be understanding has really encouraged me. I’ve really felt supported and reassured. Setting a quit date also really helped me because I had a goal to aim for. Since quitting, I have more energy, more money in my pocket and I feel better.”
