Hello Kitty x Godzilla Is 2025’s Cutest (and Strangest) Crossover Yet

Few Japanese characters have captured the imagination of fans across the globe like Sanrio's Hello Kitty and Toho's Godzilla. Given the enduring legacy of both characters, it's almost shocking that the two haven't starred together in more crossovers. A new collaboration, however, is looking to change that. In a post by Godzilla's official Japanese X account, Hello Kitty and fellow Sanrio star Cinnamoroll got a Godzilla makeover. The two tiny kaiju dress in a pair of mean-looking Godzilla costumes, which only makes the pair all the more adorable. The collaboration was revealed in celebration of Godzilla Fest and came with a tease of more Sanrio characters getting in on the fun. From the silhouettes above Hello Kitty and Cinnamoroll, fans can see that Pochacco, Kuromi, Pom Pom Purin, and Hangyodon will get their own Godzilla costumes, which is sure to delight fans of these legendary Sanrio characters. Hello Kitty and Godzilla Is the Pop-Culture Mashup You Didn't Know You Needed The collaboration comes at a time when both the Sanrio and Godzilla brands are experiencing a bit of a renaissance. After Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004, the world's most iconic movie monster entered hibernation for 12 years, finally returning to cinemas for Hideaki Anno's Shin Godzilla. While that movie was well-received, it was a one-off film that didn't mark the start of a new franchise or era for Godzilla. After another 7-year wait, Godzilla would finally make his thunderous return in 2023's Godzilla Minus One. That movie earned critical acclaim, with Minus One even snagging an Oscar. Minus One was so critically and commercially successful that a sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, was even announced at Godzilla Fest. Meanwhile, Hello Kitty and the folks at Sanrio have shown no signs of slowing down. The recent stop-motion My Melody & Kuromi stop-motion anime earned a great deal of acclaim upon release, with many ranking it among the best Sanrio anime ever made. Hello Kitty's Godzilla Crossover Somehow Isn't Her Weirdest Though some might be baffled to see Hello Kitty dressed up as Godzilla, it is far from the weirdest crossover she's participated in. Perhaps the most famous is Hello Kitty x Gundam. This odd crossover confirmed that Hello Kitty is actually stronger than a Gundam as she grew to mech size and duked it out with Gundam's original protagonist, Amuro Ray.
