Heavy snow expected in NE Ohio; 3-5 inches possible

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Wet, heavy snow is expected overnight in Northeast Ohio and it could cause issues for drivers Monday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Geauga and Lake counties, effective until 1 p.m. Tuesday. Forecasters say some areas could have 3 to 5 inches of snow on the ground by the time the storm ends. It’s a revision of earlier forecasts, which had predicted up to 10 inches were possible. Higher elevations might see larger amounts of snow. An advisory is in effect in Summit, Portage and Trumbull counties until 10 p.m. Tuesday. Two to 4 inches are possible. An advisory is in effect in Lorain and Medina counties until 1 p.m. Tuesday, with up to 4 inches of snow in the forecast. The Weather Service says the snow could create slick conditions for drivers, especially on bridges and overpasses. Squalls in which snow falls at 1 inch per hour could reduce visibility to less than a quarter-mile. “During lake-effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away,” the Weather Service says. “Visibilities can also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility and road conditions.” The advisory urges drivers to obey travel restrictions issued by the Ohio Department of Transportation and Ohio Turnpike. Residents should consider delaying unnecessary travel. The heavy snow also could cause damage to trees, leading to power outages.
