The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on Sunday. The alert also covers Thane, Raigad, and Palghar, as the Konkan coast braces for a prolonged wet spell.On Saturday, Mumbai experienced persistent overcast skies and intermittent rain. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the island city recorded 30.07 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8 am. However, local train services reported minor delays, which are common during spells of heavy rain.Airlines have issued a travel advisory to travellers urging them to plan their commute in advance. IndiGo airlines issued a travel advisory on X, urging passengers to keep checking their flight status.Air India also urged passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. “Persistent and heavy rain may impact flight operations to and from Mumbai today…allow extra time for your journey due to possible slow-moving traffic. Our airport colleagues will be available to assist as needed,” the airline said in its advisory on X.In response to the red alert, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has heightened its preparedness. While six teams have been deployed in flood-prone districts of Marathwada, with two each in Solapur and Dharashiv, and one each in Beed and Latur, teams stationed in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Nagpur remain on high alert for rapid deployment if needed.Shri Santosh Bahadur Singh, Commandant of NDRF Pune, confirmed that the force is fully prepared to extend all possible support to affected regions.The red alert is an escalation from an earlier orange alert issued on Saturday morning.
