A cocaine dealer was caught after police found him drink-driving, a court has heard. When he was pulled over in the early hours of the morning officers found Ieuan Beckerleg had ready-to-sell cocaine deals, £1,400 in cash, and a “tick list” of customers in his phone. The defendant’s barrister told Swansea Crown Court her 30-year-old client’s use of alcohol and cocaine and his involvement with gambling had “spiralled” in recent times and said he realised that the choices he had made had led to the breakdown of his relationship with his partner. Sending the dad-of-three to prison a judge told him that those who involve themselves in the supply of Class A drugs know they face an immediate custodial sentence if caught because such substances ruin the lives of users and their families – something the defendant knows from personal experience. Brian Simpson, prosecuting, told the court that in the early hours of July 28 this year a police officer on patrol in the Milford Haven area saw a Volkswagen Polo driving “erratically” near Sentry Cross and pulled it over. He said the officer spoke to the driver of the car, Beckerleg, who “smelled of an intoxicant” and a subsequent roadside breathalyser was positive for alcohol. The defendant was searched and officers found a total of 4.6g of cocaine in four snap-seal bags along with £1,400 in cash. The defendant was arrested and in his subsequent interview answered “largely no comment” to questions asked but did say the cocaine found by police was for his own use. The court heard a search of the defendant’s house turned up £1,500 in cash and bags of empty snap-seal bags but no drugs. Officers accessed the defendant’s phone and found messages relating to the supply of drugs as well as a so-called “tick list” of 17 names and amounts owed. Ieuan Beckerleg, of Haven Close, Hakin, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire , had previously pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine with intent to supply when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. He has four previous convictions for four offences including two of driving with excess alcohol, one of which relates to the events of July 28 this year. Hannah George, for Beckerleg, said the defendant’s use of “cocaine and other substances including alcohol” has become “more problematic” over the last two years and said the father-of-three realised the choices he had made had led to the breakdown of his relationship with his partner. She said due to recent family health concerns Beckerleg’s involvement with alcohol, cocaine, and gambling had “spiralled”. Judge Catherine Richards said all those who involve themselves in the supply of cocaine know they face an immediate custodial sentence if caught. With a one-third discount for his guilty plea Beckerleg was sentenced to 28 months in prison. He will serve up to half the sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community. The court heard he had previously appeared at magistrates’ court and been fined and disqualified from driving for 40 months for the July 28 drink-driving offence.
