He said yes! Woman proposes to her boyfriend after running Dublin Marathon

Endorphins were high at the finish line of the Dublin Marathon on Sunday, and one couple was feeling the love even more than their fellow participants. Berta Quiñonero, 27, was determined to get the 42km marathon over as fast as possible, and not only because she was struggling with the distance. She was also overcome with the excitement of what was waiting for her at the finish line... a proposal! The Barcelona native got down on one knee after the run and popped the question to her boyfriend, Kahumburuka Tuahuku, who had finished the marathon earlier. View this post on Instagram Berta calmly collected her medal before unhooking the ring from her bracelet and finding her boyfriend to pop the question. Of course, Kahumburuka said yes, and the pair left a newly engaged couple! The couple met each other in 2023 at Sanctuary Runners, a group aiming to bring asylum seekers, migrants, and members of the wider Irish public together through sport. Berta revealed that the thought of popping the question meant that she stopped caring about the race itself halfway through running. 'Honestly, I stopped caring about the race halfway through. I just wanted to get to the finish line,' she told the Irish Times. 'I was just worried I was not going to make it because I was struggling.' She joked that she wasn't at all nervous in the lead-up to the proposal, saying: 'I had 42 kilometres to think about it.' Kahumburuka is a 31-year-old originally from Makunda, Botswana, and his new fiancée revealed that it hasn't always been easy for him securing international protection in Ireland. Berta said: 'Kahumburuka never gave up on his case. He chose to secure his protection on his own terms, with hope and patience. And he did.' People flocked to congratulate the happy couple on the special moment. 'Congrats Berta & Kahumburka, this has made my day!' one person penned, while another added: 'Congratulations to Berta and Kahumburuka. This is so gorgeous.' 'Congratulations to everyone involved. Incredible strength, fitness, determination and love. And especially to Berta and Kahumburuka on your engagement,' a third person wrote.
