Hawaii Health Department warns of peach recalls

The Hawaii Department of Health is alerting residents of a recent recall of yellow and white peaches sold at local stores and supermarkets due to potential listeria contamination. Moonlight Companies on Oct. 29 voluntarily recalled the California-grown peaches, which were sold between Sept. 16 and Oct. 29 at stores including Costco, Target, Whole Foods, Times Supermarkets and Big Save. The DOH Food and Drug Branch is working with these stores to ensure that the recalled product is no longer available for sale. To date, there have been no confirmed reports of illness or adverse events attributed to the recalled products. The peaches were either sold as individual pieces of fruit bearing PLU stickers or as multipacks in bags. However, the recall does not include packages or PLU stickers with the words “Washington” and/or “Organic.” The recalled products include: >> Moonlight yellow peaches, individual pieces, PLU Sticker 4401, 4044; multipacks; >> Moonlight white peaches, individual pieces, PLUS 4401, 4044; multipacks; >> Moonlight white peaches (peppermint peach) multipacks; A full list of recalled products, with photos, is available on the FDA website. Listeria infections can cause serious illness and, in rare cases, death. People who are pregnant, older than 65 or have weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Symptoms include fever, severe headache, muscle aches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and/or diarrhea. Although people can develop listeriosis up to two months after eating contaminated food, DOH said symptoms will usually start within several days from consumption, often with diarrhea. Listeriosis may be treated with antibiotics. Anyone exhibiting symptoms after having consumed any of the recalled products should contact their health care provider immediately. If any of the recalled products have been purchased, consumers are advised to seal the product in a zip-top plastic bag and dispose of it, then wash hands thoroughly and sanitize any areas that may have come in contact with the product. Consumers with questions about refunds should contact Moonlight Companies at 855-215-5017 Monday through Friday from 2 a.m. to 11 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time.
