A serious road accident on Friday afternoon at the Ashaiman Overhead in the Greater Accra Region left commuters in shock after a police-escorted hearse reportedly caused a multiple-vehicle collision involving a Toyota V8 belonging to the founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga. According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred during a period of heavy traffic when the police-escorted hearse, allegedly moving at high speed, attempted to maneuver through the congestion. In the process, it reportedly collided with a Toyota V8 registered in the name of Ayariga. The impact of the collision caused the V8—also said to have been moving at considerable speed—to crash into a nearby commercial vehicle before veering off the road into a drainage. One person sustained injuries in the accident and was quickly transported to a nearby health facility for treatment. Emergency responders and police personnel arrived at the scene shortly after the crash to manage traffic flow and ensure public safety. Both the Toyota V8 and the commercial vehicle were later towed away from the scene to allow for free vehicular movement. Hassan Ayariga, who was not present in the vehicle at the time of the crash, has expressed deep concern and distress over the incident. In a statement, he described the accident as “shocking and unfortunate,” expressing relief that no lives were lost.
