Harvard doctor shares what happens after 2 weeks of eating chia seeds — and how to do it right

Global Desk Chia seeds are small black or white seeds that many people add to their morning routine. They are packed with fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, antioxidants, and important minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron.Regularly eating chia seeds is said to help with blood sugar control, heart health, bone strength, and muscle recovery, as per Dr. Saurabh Sethi, Gastroenterologist, trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford. Omega-3 and fiber benefits of chia seedsAs per the TOI report, in a recent Instagram post, Dr. Saurabh Sethi explained what happens when you eat chia seeds for 14 days and how to consume them correctly. He said chia seeds are among the richest plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids, especially alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which helps maintain heart, brain, and cellular health. Apart from regulating cholesterol, Omega 3s also bolster brain functioning and improve mood. And a mere 2 spoonfuls of overnight soaked chia seeds provide plenty of it, apart from giving at least 30% of your daily fibre needs, aiding in stimulating good bacteria in the gut and improving digestion. It’s also potent in stabilising blood sugar levels. Dr. Sethi says that chia seeds need to be soaked, as they absorb 12 times their weight of water and can wreak havoc in the gut if consumed raw, TOI reported. But when soaked, the same quality helps them make one feel fuller, with their gel-like paste post- soaking slowing digestion and curbing cravings for food.Live EventsHow to eat chia seeds for best health resultsJust 2 tablespoons give about 10 g of fiber, and because chia absorbs water and forms a gel, it fills your stomach and helps prevent overeating. A 12-week trial found overweight adults who ate 35 g of chia flour daily lost about 1.1 kg, especially those who were obese. So, chia seeds can lead to modest weight loss and smaller waist size when eaten daily with proper calorie control. Though soaking with water can reap all the fibrous benefits of Chia seeds, soaking them with yoghurt is what packs the real punch, Dr. Sethi says. The prebiotics come from the fibre, while the probiotics come from the yoghurt, creating short-chain fatty acids like butyrate which bolster the gut lining. With yogurt, even 15 minute soaking reaps in great health benefits, adding protein and healthy fats in the mix as well. With yoghurt known to be able to curb some degree of risk over colon cancer, the fibre in chia adds another level as they insulate the colon from cancerous cells, research shows. This mix supports smoother digestion, less bloating, and longer fullness, making it an ideal breakfast or snack that fuels both your body and gut health.FAQsQ1.
