Shardiya Navratri holds a very special place among Hindus. The festival began on September 22, 2025, and will conclude with Mahanavami on October 1. Each day of Navratri is dedicated to one form of the Goddess, and prayers are offered with devotion. Maha Ashtami, also known as Maha Durga Ashtami, will be observed on 30 September. It begins with Mahasnan and Shodashopachar Puja. On this day, nine small pots are placed, and the nine Shaktis of Durga are invoked in them. All nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped during the Maha Ashtami Puja. Maha Ashtami is linked to the legend of Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura. According to Hindu mythology, Mahishasura was a powerful demon who terrorised heaven and earth. To end his tyranny, the Gods created Goddess Durga, who finally defeated him on the eighth day of battle. Kanjak Puja is main ritual on Durga Ashtami. The ritual involves inviting nine young girls into homes and worshipping them as embodiments of the Goddess. They are offered food such as kheer (rice pudding), puri (fried bread), and chana (chickpeas). This tradition is believed to bring blessings of health and prosperity.
