Handyman dies in suspected drowning at Maracas Bay

A 59-year-old handyman from Maracas died on Tuesday evening in a suspected drowning incident at the Maracas Bay estuary.

Police identified the victim as Lakhan Ramsingh of LP 4, North Coast Road, Maracas.

At around 7 p.m., Ramsingh was liming and drinking alcohol with a friend, Joseph Kangalee, in the Maracas Bay fishing village. Kangalee told police he briefly left to attend to a pot on the fire, but on his return, he discovered Ramsingh missing.

Kangalee and several other villagers launched a search, and Ramsingh was eventually spotted floating in the murky waters of the estuary. He was said to be showing faint signs of life when pulled from the water.

Police officers transported Ramsingh to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he died.

Officers from the Maracas Bay Police Station, accompanied by Kangalee, later revisited the scene to interview witnesses.
