Hampton officer shoots man after unknowingly entering store being robbed, police say

HAMPTON — An investigation is underway after a police officer shot a man who “brandished a firearm” during an attempted robbery early Monday morning, according to police.
Around 4:15 a.m., an on-duty officer — who has not been named — stopped at the Royal Farms convenience store in the 4000 block of West Mercury Boulevard, south of Big Bethel Road.
Unbeknownst to the officer, an armed robbery was happening inside the business, according to Hampton Police.
The officer entered the store and found a man and a woman engaged in the robbery, police said. The man “brandished a firearm” and was shot by the officer. Details on how the man brandished the firearm were not released.
The woman, who was behind the counter at the time, ran away but was caught quickly by a different officer arriving at the scene, police said.
The Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue responded and took the injured man to a local hospital for treatment. He is listed in critical but stable condition, according to Monday morning’s release. The officer was not injured.
Detectives from the Hampton Police Division’s Major Crimes Unit are investigating. No other details have been released.
