Hamilton Green: A Lifelong champion of Sports and Service turns 91 today Nov 09, 2025 Sports Former Prime Minister and long-serving Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Belal Mohammed Green, has been a steadfast supporter and contributor to sports across Guyana for as long as most can remember. Today, this remarkable son of the soil celebrates his 91st birthday, marking yet another milestone in a lifetime of service, leadership, and community involvement. Green holds a distinguished place in history as Guyana’s first and only Muslim Prime Minister, and notably, the first and only Muslim head of government in the entire Western Hemisphere. A dedicated trade unionist and political figure since 1961, his impact has extended far beyond politics, reaching deeply into the nation’s sporting and social fabric. Even in his senior years, Green remains vibrant and engaged, continuing to inspire generations through his unwavering enthusiasm for sport. His enduring contribution is fittingly recognized through the Hamilton Green Cup, an annual football tournament that continues to thrive in his honour. The tournament stands as a symbol of appreciation for his decades of dedication to both national development and the advancement of sport in Guyana. The organisers of this prestigious event are once again calling on members of the corporate community to lend their support to the upcoming 2025 edition of the Mayor’s Cup, emphasizing its vital role in youth development, community building, and athletic excellence. Beyond the on-field excitement, the tournament traditionally hosted in the West Demerara district, fosters camaraderie among players and fans alike, while promoting patriotism and empowerment among young footballers. This year’s competition kicks off on December 14, 2025, and runs until January 11, 2026, featuring 24 teams battling over five nights for a lucrative championship prize (to be announced). Among the participating teams are Uitvlugt, Pouderoyen, Den Amstel, Zeelugt, Beavers, Eagles, Stewartville, Crane, Wales, Belle West Stars, Harmony, No. 1 All Stars, Uprising, Hurry Ate, Timehri United, Herstelling, Soesdyke, Mocha, Gladiators, Pele, Campbellville, Espanyol, and Madrid. With just over a month to go before kickoff, Tournament Coordinator Lennox Arthur has expressed his commitment to ensuring a smooth and successful staging of the 2025 edition. The organisers aim to make this year’s tournament bigger and better than ever, and with anticipated support from the business community, prize monies are expected to increase, making the competition even more exciting and rewarding for players involved.
