Halloween Wars host Jonathan Bennett addresses show's divisive new format

Halloween Wars host Jonathan Bennett has shared his honest thoughts on the show's current format, candidly revealing that he misses the original. The popular Food Network show aired its season 15 finale on Sunday, and while the host has been blown away by this year's contestants, he does yearn for the layout and guest judges of yesteryear. Speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, Bennett, 44, said: 'I don't make the rules on how the format goes on the show. 'If it was up to me, we'd be doing the original format of Halloween Wars, where we have the celebrity guest judge from, like, a scary movie.' Halloween Wars premiered on the Food Network in 2011. The high-stakes competition series follows teams of cake sculptors, sugar artists and pumpkin carvers who face off against each other to produce the ultimate Halloween themed display. Over the years, Halloween Wars has evolved. In earlier seasons, the show welcomed many famous faces to guest judge alongside permanent judges Shinmin Li and Aarti Sequeira. In recent years, this has changed, with just Bennett and his two co-stars at the helm. Casting his mind back to previous versions, Bennett recalled: 'We had the kids from Stranger Things! We had we had all these amazing guest judges and all these people to come in. 'The format's changed a little bit where now it's the two judges, me and the contestants. 'But, you know, in my dream scenario, I would go back to the OG format, because if it ain't broke, don't fix it!' Despite the changes, Bennett heaped praise on the show's loyal fanbase and said he and the crew are 'indebted' for the 'constant support.' He added: 'We're in season 15 of Halloween Wars on Food Network and every year I say, "They can't get bigger and better. It's not possible!" And every year the contestants come on and they outdo what last season did. 'Season 15 is proof of that! It's exactly proof of how big the pumpkins can be.' Bennett described Halloween Wars as the 'best Pinterest inspo board for Halloween decorations and costumes you'll ever see.' He added: 'It's literally the best artists in the world, putting together little Halloween stories and vignettes with carved pumpkin, cake, and sugar. 'So, it's just a celebration of everything you want at Halloween through food.' Bennett has served as host of Halloween Host since 2016. Formerly, the series was helmed by presenter Justin Willman. This year's Halloween Wars was won by Poisonous Perfection after they battled it out against The Undercakers in the finale. Both teams sliced their way through the competition with razor sharp precision and have created terrifyingly delicious creations that combine cake and pumpkin. Poisonous Perfection succeeded in the final challenge and took home the coveted championship title and $25,000.
