By Love Wilhelmina Abanonave Ghanaian actor, Oscar Provençal has disclosed that keeping hair in public schools does not determine the student’s grades, intelligence or performance. According to him, student’s must have the mindset that having long hair will not help in their performance but would rather become a source of distraction. “Hair does not determine how intelligent you are”, he said. Speaking on GTV’s breakfast show on Monday, October 27, 2025, Mr. Provençal lamented how the nation accorded much seriousness to the video of a young lady who was shedding tears while her hair was being cut because she was about entering Senior High School. According to him, there were issues such as security of students in school, the quality of food they were being served in school and even the rise of the use of mobile phones among students in schools. “Why are we discussing hair when there are other important issues to be discussed in this country?”, he asked. This came after Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu after noticing the video circulating enforced a strict hair policy in Senior High Schools, banning long and unkempt hairstyles. Speaking at the 75th anniversary celebration of Mawuli SHS, the Minister stated that discipline and proper grooming are essential to education, and that schools are not beauty contests.
