Gwynedd school closed after burst pipe causes 'substantial damage'

A Gwynedd school is closed after a burst water pipe caused “substantial damage”. The incident happened at Ysgol Cae Top in Bangor over the weekend.

It has caused major damage to the internal structure and contents. A full assessment will be carried out once carpets and other furniture is removed.

The school was closed today and there is no reopening date at this stage. The current £4m school was opened in 2009 – replacing a Victorian building that had previously housed pupils.

A Cyngor Gwynedd spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Ysgol Cae Top in Bangor is currently closed following a water burst over the weekend which caused substantial damage to the school internal structure and contents. Council staff have been stripping out the damaged carpets and moving furniture so that the full extent of the damage can be assessed before repair and restoration work can be carried out. “Parents and guardians are being updated about the situation and the Council’s Education Department is working on a plan to allow the pupils and staff to return to the classrooms safely. In the meantime, arrangements for remote learning are being put in place.

“We are grateful to the pupils, their families and the wider community for their patience and understanding while we deal with this emergency situation and as alternative arrangements are put in place.”
