The chief Manager in charge of Corporate Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation at the Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Michael Tawiah Klutse, has cautioned that illegal sand mining activities along water bodies in the Volta Region pose a looming threat to the region’s clean and affordable water supply. Speaking to the media in Ho, Klutse stated that the Volta Region enjoys one of the lowest water production costs in the country due to the exceptional quality of its raw water sources. Unlike other parts of Ghana, GWCL does not require coagulants such as alum to treat water in most of the region’s systems. Instead, water is pumped, filtered, disinfected, and distributed at minimal chemical cost. However, he warned that this advantage is being eroded by rising turbidity levels caused by sand winning activities along rivers. “This is not about illegal mining per se, but sand mining by the river bodies is disturbing the water quality If this continues unchecked, Ghana Water will soon be forced to introduce coagulants in the Volta Region, driving up production costs and potentially leading to shutdowns like we’ve seen in other parts of the country.” Klutse stressed that while the problem is not yet widespread, occasional shutdowns have already been necessary to allow turbidity levels to stabilize. He urged authorities and communities to act swiftly to protect the region’s water sources from degradation. “You are good now, but keep on being good in perpetuity,” he cautioned. “Don’t allow selfish interests to destroy what we have, or the region will face the same water quality crises being experienced elsewhere.” Reporting by Solomon Mensah-Ahiable Volta region Asaase Broadcasting Company airs on Asaase 99.5 Accra, Asaase 98.5 Kumasi, Asaase 99.7 Tamale, Asaase 100.3 Cape Coast, AsaasePa 107.3 (Accra).
