Guyana’s first school for deaf nearing completion

Guyana will soon have its first dedicated school for the deaf, which when completed, will provide a modern learning environment for 30 deaf learners and serve as a resource hub for deaf youth, offering programmes that foster inclusivity, personal development, and community engagement, a Ministry of Education release has stated.

The project, valued at $194,472,570, is located in Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara. The project is being executed by Superior Supplies and General Construction and is on schedule for completion in November, the release said.

It added that on Saturday, Minister of Education Sonia Parag visited the site to assess its progress. She was accompanied by Permanent Secretary Shanielle Hoosein-Outar, Assistant Chief Education Officer with responsibility for Special Education Needs and Disabilities Dr Keon Cheung, and Head of Buildings Gerron Parker.

In her exchange with the contractor, the release said, Minister Parag stressed that the project’s timely and quality completion is a matter of national priority, and that the school must stand as a model of excellence for inclusive education in Guyana.

With completion expected in just a few weeks, the new school represents a milestone in Guyana’s education sector, as part of the government’s efforts to create inclusive, equitable, and empowering spaces for all learners, the release stated.
