As Jamaica prepares for Hurricane Melissa, which is expected to make landfall there tomorrow morning, the Government of Guyana said that it is closely monitoring the situation and has made preparations to provide support or evacuate Guyanese students and citizens living there, if necessary. In addition, President Irfaan Ali has also put the Civil Defence Commission and Guyana Defence Force on standby for rapid mobilization to the northern Caribbean island if this country is called on for assistance. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is closely monitoring Hurricane Melissa which is approaching Jamaica where a number of Guyanese students are studying. President Irfaan Ali has mandated Permanent Secretary Sharon Roopchand-Edwards to engage Guyana’s Honorary Consul and students and other Guyanese living in Jamaica to ensure their safety and prepare care packages, if necessary,” a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
