The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), last week launched a Subregional Leprosy Training Workshop at its Guyana Country Office in a move that will significantly boost this country’s efforts to eliminate leprosy by 2030. According to a Ministry of Health release, the aim of the workshop is to strengthen clinical, laboratory, and programmatic capacities across participating countries to enhance leprosy case detection, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, while supporting the development of national strategies aligned with the global leprosy elimination goals. Leprosy is a bacterial infection that can damage nerves, muscles, eyes, skin and respiratory tract. It can cause permanent paralysis, blindness, and damage to hands, feet and the face.
