The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed the Royal Nursing College in Kumasi to immediately halt operations after it was discovered that the institution’s accreditation had expired nearly four years ago.
In a letter dated September 12, 2025, signed by GTEC’s Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, the Commission revealed that the college’s accreditation expired on December 16, 2021.
The letter clarified that the college cannot continue its operations as a tertiary institution until it obtains full accreditation from both GTEC and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
This directive follows an August 28, 2025, meeting between officials from the college, GTEC, the NMC, and the Ministry of Health’s Health Training Institutions Unit.
According to the directive, the Royal Nursing College is required to:
Submit staff documentation – This includes appointment letters, CVs, and proof of regular remuneration for management and teaching staff to confirm the employment status of personnel.
Cease operations immediately – The college is to collaborate with its mentor institution, the University of Cape Coast (UCC), to create a teach-out plan for students admitted between 2021 and 2024.
Suspend admissions – No new students can be admitted until the accreditation is fully restored.
The Commission further instructed the college to address any identified deficiencies and submit proof of corrective measures. A joint verification visit by GTEC and the NMC will be conducted before any consideration of reinstating the accreditation.
GTEC stressed the importance of treating the matter with “the utmost urgency and seriousness it deserves.”
