Ice-cream manufacturers on Wednesday said they have decided to reduce prices of their products by 7-10 per cent, after the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on ice-creams was reduced to 5 per cent from the earlier 18 per cent.
“We have provided a broad outline to our members to reduce the MRP on ice-creams by 7-8 per cent. This includes products ranging from 100 ml tubs to 1 litre packs. Some members have also agreed to slash rates by 10 per cent,” Sudhir Shah, president of The Indian Ice-Cream Manufacturers’ Association (IICMA) told businessline. The new MRPs will come into effect from September 22.
Members of the association had also considered increasing the grammage of the products, without altering prices. However, the idea was shelved. “This looked not feasible at this point in time as most manufacturers have old packaging material. But, overall, we are trying to ensure that consumers benefit,” Shah added. IICMA said stocks that are no longer with manufacturers and are currently in the possession of retailers, distributors or stockists, will also be sold at the new rates from next week.
However, some of the large ice-cream brands such as Amul and Vadilal are yet to officially announce a reduction in prices. Mother Dairy was the first large brand to announce a cut in the MRP for ice-creams and an array of other products.
On Tuesday, Mother Dairy announced a 9-16 per cent reduction in the price of ice-creams. The price of Mother Dairy’s Ice-candy, vanilla cup and chocobars (30-40 ml packs) have been reduced by 10 per cent, while that of the Choco Vanilla Cone and butterscotch cone (100 ml) have seen a 16 per cent reduction. Similarly, the cost of one litre packs has been reduced by 9 per cent. “As a consumer centric organisation, we are passing on 100 per cent of the tax benefit to our patrons, effective September 22, keeping up with the spirit of this reform,” said Manish Banddlish, Managing Director, Mother Dairy.
