Grouse Room closes after creditor files to seize property

A downtown entertainment venue has closed after its creditor filed to seize the property.
The Grouse Room, which owner Matt Chaisson opened at 417 Jefferson St. in the spring of 2020 after moving from a location along Kaliste Saloom Road, quietly closed its doors this week.
Its social media accounts made no mention of the closing. Zydeco musician Sean Ardoin, who was scheduled to perform there on Oct. 10, confirmed the location has closed in a social media post.
First National Bank of Jeanerette in July filed that it had seized the property in May, land records show. Chaisson got a mortgage for $2.66 million when when he bought the 9,000-square-foot building in 2023.
A sign in the window Wednesday indicated the property is for sale.
Last May 15th Judicial District Judge Michelle Billeaud ordered Chaisson and The Grouse Room to pay nearly $20,000 in past due sales tax, interest and penalties to the Lafayette Parish School Board, records show.
At the time Billeaud also ordered the business be closed until the matter was settled.
Chaisson moved the business downtown in 2020 under a lease-to-own agreement with the previous buyer, reports indicate.
The two-story space holds 800 people, and the second floor holds 30% of the capacity. It was a popular spot for live music by local and regional musicians and public gatherings.
Ardoin said those who had bought tickets to his show will be refunded.
