Groundbreaking held for inclusive housing development in downtown La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) – A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday morning for the Haven on Main development project.
Haven on Main will be a 70-unit apartment complex. Half of the units will be leased to people with disabilities.
The development is meant to address downtown housing issues, along with housing for vulnerable populations.
Project organizers say the La Crosse community came together to make it a reality.
“When we approached our fundraising, we wanted to keep it community driven. We’re thrilled that La Crosse has responded from grants, social impact investment, and donations. It has truly been a group community effort,” says CouleeCap executive director Hetti Brown.
Project organizers add that adults with disabilities have very few housing options in the area.
“Many times they’re left with needing to live with family members, or they’re left with options that are more institutional like group homes. What Haven on Main will offer is truly independent living. Adults with disabilities can live in their own apartment in a supportive and inclusive environment,” says Brown.
Construction is expected to be completed in September 2026, with the building opening to residents by the end of the same year.
