Grizzlies Had Major NBA Contender ‘Check’ on Ja Morant Trade

NBA star Ja Morant has shown apparent frustration with his team, the Memphis Grizzlies, which led to a one-game suspension and evasive remarks to reporters. It's also led to trade rumors, which is often the case for distressed players. Ja indicated he didn't have the same "joy" for playing basketball with the Grizzlies that he once did. Since then, he's continued suiting up and playing for his squad, but it hasn't quelled speculation that Memphis might trade him. On various sports news and talk shows, analysts mentioned a potential decline in Morant's value due to his on- and off-court issues, including suspensions for multiple incidents. However, at least one NBA contender is reportedly interested in acquiring Morant, or at least testing the trade market. That contender also plays in the Western Conference, and it would pair Morant with another star, as the Minnesota Timberwolves, featuring emerging superstar Anthony Edwards, reportedly "checked in" on a trade with Memphis. The NBA trade deadline arrives on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2026. The Timberwolves are a team trying to figure out their point guard situation, with veteran Mike Conley carrying much of the load last season. However, he's on the tail end of his NBA career. The Wolves also feature younger player Rob Dillingham, who's still developing his skill set, and Dontate DiVincenzo, who isn't considered a natural fit at that position. Frontcourt star Julius Randle currently leads the team in assists per game, suggesting that adding Morant as a true facilitator could be the missing piece the Timberwolves need. The team lost in the last two Western Conference Finals to the Dallas Mavericks, led by Luka Doncic, and, more recently, to the Oklahoma City Thunder, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, both of whom are two great playmakers. This season, Morant is averaging 19.2 points, 7.9 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game. His ability to score or make the right plays would undoubtedly create a dynamic duo —or “Big Three”—alongside Minnesota's other top stars. However, it's unknown if they'd be able to offer the picks and/or players that the Grizzlies would want. Based on Krawczynski's remarks, a deal is unlikely in the near future. Still, it is intriguing to wonder what the Timberwolves might offer to land a player of Morant's caliber, or if other teams would get involved in some blockbuster deal.
