Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh on Wednesday launched Green Leaf Rating system for public and private sector institutions, tourist attractions, and public places on the basis of cleanliness as well as a ₹1,500-scholarship for students to increase awareness on cleanliness. The Minister also released a book on International Vrithi Conclave organised by the department earlier this year in the capital. The Local Self-Governments department (LSGD) will implement the Green Leaf Rating system in collaboration with the Departments of General Education, Higher Education, Technical Education, Health, Women and Child Development, Transport and Tourism under the leadership of the Suchitwa Mission. In the first phase, tourist destinations, health centres, educational institutions, hostels and KSRTC will be included in the rating. In the second phase, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, auditoriums and flats will also be part of the Green Leaf rating. The government will provide rewards and recognition to institutions that achieve the best rating. The Student Green Army Scholarship, named Ecosense, will be jointly implemented by the LSGD and the General Education department for students of Classes VI and VII in the upper primary category, Classes VIII and IX in the high school category, and Plus One. Ecosense aims to inspire students to develop green skills and find practical solutions to local waste problems. The scholarship has been designed by incorporating the concepts included in the activity books and textbooks for Classes V to X under the leadership of the State Council of Educational Research and Training.
