Greater Manchester wheelchair racer hails family after bagging World Championship bronze

Nathan Maguire says the support of his family propelled him to a bronze medal at the World Para Athletics Championships. The Salford wheelchair racer, 28, grabbed his second global gong by finishing third in the T54 1500m in New Delhi. Maguire is married to Hannah Cockroft, who won her 18 th world title the previous evening in the T34 100m. Cockroft, plus Maguire’s parents and a bumper British coaching contingent, were in attendance at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to roar the north-west star on in Thursday morning’s final. And Maguire says that impact helped him bag a spot on the podium. “The support was incredible,” he said. “They know how much it means to me and I know how much it means to them, so to be able to perform in front of them and do that for them is really special. “I could hear them every time I came round and as I went down the home straight – that fuelled me to get to the finish line. “For my parents to travel over here and spend all their time with me is great. I’m absolutely buzzing. Going into it I knew I had the potential, I just needed to get myself in a good position and use my kick.” Maguire and Cockroft, 33, are two of over 30 British athletes out in the subcontinent, with the team now sponsored by official finance partner Novuna. Maguire was tucked in fourth for the majority of the race but timed his surge to perfection, reeling in Swiss star Marcel Hug on the final bend to finish third behind Chinese duo Jin Hua and Luo Xingchuan. He will now turn his attention to the 800m event this weekend, which he won bronze in at the World Championships in Kobe last year. Maguire added: “That race played into my hands – it was brilliant and I loved every second of it. “The others were jostling with each other and I just sat back, knew I was in the right place and was ready to go at the end – my top speed is one of my big strengths. “Tactically I’m not amazing so to be able to do a tactical race like that and come home with bronze means I’m going in the right direction. “I’ve still got the 800m to come – so I’m going into it with a little bit more confidence than I had before. I’m absolutely buzzing.” Novuna is the Official Finance Partner of British Athletics and proud sponsor of the GB & NI Athletics Team.
