The most deprived areas in Greater Manchester have been revealed by new data released yesterday (November 4). The Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) are regarded as the most definitive method for identifying disadvantaged and poverty-stricken areas in the country. The new figures, calculated by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, are scores for each area based on analysis of income, employment, education, health, crime, housing and the state of the local environment. Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE It is the first time the figures have been updated since 2019, with the latest data reflecting the impact of Covid on local communities. In England, the scores are calculated for very small neighbourhoods known as LSOAs which have a population of around 1,500 people- and one area in Stockport came just shy of the bottom 20. Central Stockport, Portwood and Shaw Heath, which encompasses the Lancashire Hill area just north of the M60 , ranked at number 21 nationally, and is the most deprived area in Greater Manchester. Central Rochdale and Mandale Park was next, ranked at number 24 nationally, followed by the Pendleton area of Salford , ranked at number 28. By contrast, the most deprived area in our region can be found just five miles away from the least deprived - and within the same borough. Cheadle Hulme West, which centres around Highfield Road in Cheadle Hulme, is also a Stockport suburb - and it scored as the sixth least deprived area in all of England. One other area made it into the national top twenty: Timperley North, centred around Riddings Road, is the second least deprived area in Greater Manchester, coming twelfth nationally. In fact the least deprived areas in our region are dominated by leafy Stockport and Trafford enclaves, with Bramhall West, Bramhall North West, West Timperley, Altrincham West, Cheadle Hulme South, and Bowdon rounding out the top ten. The most deprived areas are a more mixed picture, encompassing Wigan East, Oldham town centre, Openshaw and Gorton North, the Fairfield area of Bury , Brinnington, Harpurhey South and Newton Heath. Nationally, the most impoverished area in England is in Nigel Farage’s constituency of Clacton. with a neighbourhood in Jaywick, Clacton-on-Sea, has been ranked with the highest deprivation score out of more than 33,750 small local areas. The area in Clacton which had the lowest score is on the coast to the west of the town, and has the official name of Tendring 018A. Most residents there live in detached bungalows on a small estate called the Brooklands Estate. The area was also named as the most deprived part of the country when the rankings were last released in 2019. The other nine most deprived areas of the country are all in Blackpool, apart from two areas in Hastings and Rotherham respectively. By contrast, the top four least deprived areas in England can be found in St Albans, with the area of Harpenden Town, around Maple Road, taking the top spot.
