Graeme McDowell ‘updates’ comment after bashing media for ‘out of context’ quotes

Graeme McDowell on had called out an aggregated post for misquoting him. The 2010 US Open Champion claimed that his comments on ‘divisiveness’ centered around the top players in golf and discussing ‘ekeing out a living’ were ‘taken out of context’ to make ‘clickbait.’ Now, the golfer has stated that his recent comment needs to be ‘updated’ after he spoke to the writer of the story.McDowell backed golf writer Ben Parsons and went on to slam the part comments circulating on social media. The 46-year-old stated that the comments ‘don’t reflect the full conversation’ and he urged readers to check the original story for full context. This comes after the publication came under fire from golf fans for confusion regarding the controversial comments.Graeme McDowell wrote on X on Wednesday:“The comment below should be updated. I’ve since spoken with Ben, and what he shared stands as I said it. Unfortunately, some of the quotes circulating on social media were taken out of context and don’t reflect the full conversation. I’d encourage everyone to read the full piece for the proper context and credit to both Ben and Bunkered.”He had wrote on Monday while sharing the aggregated post by NUCLR GOLF:“Clickbait at its finest here. The article is about what it would mean to me to be the Ryder Cup captain in Ireland in 2027. Misquoted regards “ekeing out a living”. Supposed to read “ekeing out the last few years of my playing career”. I’ve been incredibly fortunate and if it was all done tomorrow all I would have is gratitude. That’s all.”Graeme McDowell makes big Ryder Cup admissionIt is also noteworthy that the original interview with Bunkered also saw McDowell admit his wish to be the next Ryder Cup captain. The Northern Irishman made the big revelation about a possible career in blue and gold despite not being part of the European Tour, courtesy of his move to LIV Golf in 2022 alongside Team Europe’s veterans like Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter.Speaking just months after Europe’s back-to-back wins in Rome and at Bethpage Black, Graeme McDowell told Bunkered:“It (Ryder Cup captaincy) is on my mind, but being honest with you, I don’t know what to do about it… I don’t know whether it should be on my mind at all, as in if it’s something that’s not possible politically. If that’s the case, clearly I’ll be disappointed… People will say I don’t deserve it and I’m responsible for a lot of what’s happened. But I’m a very, very small cog in this big wheel.”After the comment on possible Ryder Cup role in the future, Graeme McDowell went on to make the ‘divisiveness’ comment which stirred a controversy. He said the ‘40-something players like himself’ would have been crazy to ‘say no to (LIV move) from a business point of view.’ For the unversed, the former PGA Tour star’s captaincy ambition stays in doubt due to the 2018 DP World Tour ruling, which states that players cannot captain or vice-captain for the European team if they have relinquished their membership in any given season.
