In Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, heritage meets horsepower as the Distinguished Gentleman’s Drive returned for its second year.
The worldwide motoring fundraiser took place in more than 50 countries on Sunday, but the Bay led the way locally with the highest number of registered cars in South Africa at 109 registered cars.
Engines roared and chrome gleamed as 109 vintage cars lined up for a scenic drive through the city. Behind the wheels were drivers dressed to the nines, as they took to the road for a noble cause.
Organiser of the Gqeberha event, Gareth Burley, says the funds raised in the event will go towards projects that support prostate cancer awareness and research, as well as men’s mental health.
“An invitation for those who love classic cars and enjoy dressing up, to come and gather and drive their cars through the city. The initiative is aimed at creating awareness for men’s health and of course, we know prostate cancer is on the increase, so this is going towards improving and assisting those lives who’ve been affected by these.”
Each entry paid $17 US – money going towards prostate cancer awareness, research, and men’s mental health through the global Movember campaign.
“The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Drive is a beautiful event showcasing classic cars, and I am a huge car fanatic myself. So, we are proud to host this event here and especially because of the cause it supports, such as Movember, as everyone knows, Movember, as well as raising awareness and funds to research into prostate cancer.”
Among the show-stoppers was the oldest car on the day, a 1911 classic whose proud driver shared its unique specs.
From rare models to personal collections, the event celebrated a shared passion for motoring heritage.
“I have four cars actually in the showcase today, I just love old cars more than the more modern ones. They drive so much better and their designs are intricate, so I just love them,” says one participant.
Another one adds, “Well, this event is also about more than just the cars, it’s about raising funds and awareness for men’s health, which is something important and something I am proud to be representing here today.”
Organisers say the drive has grown since last year, and they’re already gearing up to go even bigger next year.
