The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) yesterday expressed concern over the rising cost of living here and called for an additional 25% increase on 2024 wages and the immediate start of negotiations on various matters including a wages policy.
In a statement, the GPSU disclosed the contents of a letter dated September 12 to Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, and copied to President Irfaan Ali on the subject “Review of Remuneration and Superannuation Bene-fits Paid to Public Sector Employees.”
The letter began by adverting to the rising cost of living and the burden it has placed on workers, particularly in the lower income bracket. It also noted government’s acknowledgement of this “urgent issue” and the measures taken to alleviate the effects of rising food and other prices on the population.
