The government has announced plans to revamp Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and Intercity STC Coaches Limited to improve safety and efficiency in public transport.
Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe disclosed this during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, September 17, stressing that both companies are financially distressed and require urgent intervention.
As part of the plan, the government will procure 350 Toyota Hiace buses, 100 coastal buses, and 50 trucks. Deliveries are expected to begin at the end of 2025 and continue into early 2026.
“The government is committed to revitalising Metro Mass Transit Limited and Intercity STC Coaches Limited, which are currently in distress and need urgent financial support,” the minister said. “We plan to modernise their fleet and upgrade infrastructure for efficient service delivery.”
He added that Intercity STC’s fleet will also be modernised in phases, with the introduction of electronic buses expected to enhance intercity operations.
The move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen public transport and ensure affordable, reliable, and safer travel across the country.
