It was said that the two, who tied the knot in 1987, have decided to part ways after 38 years of marriage. However, the couple dismissed all rumours during Ganesh Chaturthi and were seen celebrating the festival together. Months later, film historian Hanif Zaveri has now claimed that Govinda and Sunita Ahuja’s divorce buzz was merely a publicity stunt. In a recent interview, Zaveri claimed that Govinda and Sunita’s divorce rumours were a PR stunt to bring back the actor into the limelight. He argued that since Govinda has been missing from the movies for a long time, his separation rumours were circulated to bring back focus on the actor. “I have known from the very beginning that there is nothing like that between them. They’ve lived a good life together, raised their children well. People are also realizing that there’s no need for Sunita ji to talk so much. I think this has been made up to bring them back into the news because Govinda is out of the limelight. He’s not active in films or politics anymore. So this is nonsense. I just want them to stay safe and together — all this talk doesn’t look good,” he said, as quoted by ETimes. “Govinda’s name was linked with several actresses like Rani Mukerji and Karisma Kapoor, but I don’t think anything was ever going on,” Zaveri shared and then added, “Given Sunita’s outspoken nature, if there had been anything real, she would have created a ruckus at that time itself. I believe this is all part of a publicity stunt,” he stated. Zaveri also addressed the long-standing gossip around Govinda’s equation with Neelam Kothari and stated, “Yes, his name was associated with Neelam because they did several films together. Such stories often came up in magazines just to promote films — it used to happen in those days, and it still does.” For the unversed, Sunita and Govinda’s love story began in the 1980s, and they tied the knot on March 11, 1987. Sunita is the sister-in-law of Govinda’s uncle, Anand Singh, who worked as an assistant to legendary filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The couple share two children—daughter Tina Ahuja, who briefly stepped into Bollywood, and son Yashvardhan.
