Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero’s administration is calling on the entire island community to join in honoring the service and sacrifice of Guam’s veterans, service members and their families as the island observes Veterans Service Recognition Month throughout November, pursuant to Public Law 38-35. “Guam’s story is forever intertwined with the story of military service,” the governor said in a statement. “Our sons and daughters have stepped forward, generation after generation, to defend our nation and protect the freedoms we hold dear. This November, we honor not only their sacrifice, but also the families who serve alongside them.” The governor said she invites every school, business, village and organization to participate in honoring veterans, listening to their stories, and expressing gratitude for their courage. “They deserve nothing less from the island they fought for,” she added. Guam maintains one of the highest per-capita rates of military service in the nation, with island residents serving in every major American conflict since World War I. Veterans Service Recognition Month expands the spirit of Veterans Day across the entire month of November to ensure that veterans, military families and Gold Star families are supported, seen, and celebrated, Adelup said. “Service is more than a uniform. It is sacrifice, resilience, and love of country and island,” Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio said. “Our veterans and their families continue to strengthen our workforce, our villages, and our future. This month is about gratitude, reflection, and action. Let us honor their legacy by supporting their wellbeing, sharing their stories, and building a Guam that values their contributions every single day.” Government of Guam agencies will incorporate veteran recognition themes in outreach, events, and communications throughout November, Adelup said. The administration also urges the community at large to show support in both small and meaningful ways. “As one island, let us take this month to honor every veteran who has carried our flag, worn our nation’s cloth, and protected our home,” Leon Guerrero said. “Their stories must be told, their service must be remembered, and their legacy must continue to inspire the next generation of Guam’s leaders.” The administration encourages all government agencies, private businesses, nonprofits, faith groups, schools, and community organizations to participate through activities such as: Educational and school engagement Invite veterans to speak with studentsIntegrate Guam’s military history into classroom lessonsEncourage student projects that honor veterans and families Cultural preservation Document and share veteran oral historiesHighlight CHamoru cultural values of service and sacrifice Community recognition Host village-based veterans appreciation eventsHonor military families and Gold Star families through community ceremonies Support services Partner with the Guam Office of Veterans Affairs to promote benefits, employment, and educational resources Honoring the Guam National Guard Recognize the dual role of Guard members in serving both Guam and the nation.
