Government’s decision to organise Sri Sathya Sai Baba centennial celebrations opposed

Members of ‘Sangamam’, a local organisation, staged a protest at Dharna Chowk in association with other secular and rationalist groups on Wednesday (September 17) against the government’s decision to host Sri Sathya Sai Baba centennial celebrations in Puttaparthi in November.

They said Sathya Sai Baba proclaimed himself to be a divine incarnation, which went against the tenets of the Constitution. They said the State and its institutions should remain neutral and must not endorse and promote any religious celebrations or activity. They said Sathya Sai Baba was surrounded by many controversies during his lifetime.

They said while individuals are free to worship or meditate their chosen deities, it is unconstitutional for the State to officially recognise a living person as an incarnation of God. Such an act, they alleged, is a violation of secular principles.

Those who participated in the protest included Divi Kumar from Jana Sahiti, K. Tajarao from Sangamam, N. Venkata Subbaiah from Rationalist Association, K. Satya Ranjan from Sahiti Sravanthi, senior journalist G.V. Rangareddy, J. Satyanarayana from Charvaka Ashram and representatives of Jana Vignana Vedika.
