Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao has said the government will upgrade District Government Wenlock and Lady Goschen Hospitals in Mangaluru to super speciality hospitals. While Wenlock, equipped with Cathlab, Day Care Chemotherapy, and other such facilities, provides state-of-the-art healthcare facilities, Lady Goschen has been facilitating 18 to 20 deliveries every day, thereby becoming models to other government facilities, Mr. Rao said. He was speaking after inaugurating the extension of the free dinner facility to attendants of patients at Lady Goschen, an initiative of M Friends Charitable Trust on Saturday, November 1. The trust had already been providing dinner to attendants of Wenlock inpatients for the last eight years. Stating that the hygiene and quality treatment available in the two government hospitals could not be seen in any other place, Mr. Rao said the new outpatient department was getting ready at Wenlock at a cost of ₹70 crore. The Karnataka Medical Council would provide additional facilities worth ₹35 crore. An ICU was commissioned at Lady Goschen. Using all these facilities, the government intends to upgrade the two hospitals to super speciality status, the Minister said. Mr. Rao said that though the government provides meals to inpatients of government hospitals, it was unable to provide the same to their attendants. Realising their difficulties, M Friends Charitable Trust launched the free dinner facility, which is laudable. Extending the scheme to Lady Goschen was appreciable, he said. MLCs Manjunath Bhandary and Ivan D’Souza, Mescom Chairman K. Harish Kumar, District Health Officer H.R. Thimmaiah, Lady Goschen Superintendent M.R. Durgaprasad, Trust President Sujah Mohammed, General Secretary Arif Mohammed Padubidri, and others were present.
