If the US government shutdown happens, it will be the first time that has happened since 2018-2019
President Donald Trump and top congressional leaders will meet at the White House on Monday, September 29, for a high-stakes meeting in hopes of avoiding a fast-approaching government shutdown. The countdown is on with a midnight October 1 deadline. If case a deal doesn’t work out, the Trump administration will be tasked with maintaining “essential” government services such as the military and law enforcement, while “non-essential” functions like national parks will close or cut staffing.If the US government shutdown happens, it will be the first time that has happened since 2018-2019. And it could disrupt the lives of many people — perhaps permanently, if Trump’s threats of massive layoffs come true.Do I have to pay my taxes during a government shutdown?Yes. A shutdown does not delay tax payments. If you requested an extension, have quarterly taxes due, or need to make other payments, the IRS will continue processing returns with a skeleton staff.I’m waiting on my tax refund. Will a government shutdown delay it?There could be delays. During the 2018–2019 shutdown, about 14,000 IRS workers did not report to work without pay. Mail delivery will continue as usual because the U.S. Postal Service is an independent agency. In the 2018 shutdown, most national parks stayed open but visitor centers and some restrooms were closed, and trash collection was paused. During the 2013 shutdown, however, parks, monuments, and other sites were completely closed.Can I visit the Smithsonian during a government shutdown?Possibly, but it’s uncertain. The Smithsonian has sometimes used prior-year funds to remain partially open, but there are no guarantees. Other federal museums, like the National Archives, will likely close. Presidential libraries overseen by the National Park Service may also be closed.
