The Senate is beginning a series of votes on the GOP deal to end the longest government shutdown in history. The breakthrough on reopening the government came after a group of Democratic Senators broke with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer late Sunday to vote with the Republican majority The deal would fund the government for several weeks and calls for a later Senate vote on extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits that are set to expire on January 1. Most Democrats had said they would not support reopening the government without Republicans first agreeing to extend the expiring tax credits. However, on Monday Speaker Mike Johnson said he couldn’t guarantee a House vote on ACA, even if it passed the Senate. Republicans are hoping for a vote on final passage for the GOP funding bill through the Senate tonight, which would be followed by a House vote tomorrow before it lands on President Donald Trump‘s desk. However, the bill requires unanimous support for a speedy vote this evening, and with many Democrats still furious their colleagues broke with the party on Sunday, the outcome of the vote is still unclear.
