Government reaffirms commitment to National Sports Fund— Felix Kwakye Ofosu

The Government of Ghana, through the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the persistent financial challenges facing national teams and other sporting disciplines through the establishment of a National Sports Fund. The proposed Sports Fund Bill, he said, is designed to create a sustainable pool of resources dedicated to developing sports infrastructure, building capacity, and improving athlete welfare across the country. Kwakye Ofosu stated that work is ongoing to finalise the bill before it is laid before Parliament for consideration. “Efforts are still underway to ensure that the bill is finalised and then it comes to Parliament for consideration,” he said. He stated that the state of Ghanaian sports—including football, athletics, and boxing—continues to raise concerns, particularly about infrastructure, incentive packages, and general investment. “My belief is that this bill will generate significant resources that enable us to invest in sports in a manner that yields the outcomes we want because we cannot expect to perform at the highest level globally when we are not investing what we should,” he added. A draft of the proposal, shared by Kwakye Ofosu on October 10, 2025, outlines 14 potential funding sources, including parliamentary allocations, sports lotteries, sponsorships, grants, and taxes from sports betting companies. Additional inflows will come from gate proceeds, athlete transfer fees (local and abroad), sponsorship deals, international federation support, and a percentage of revenues from competitions and sports vendors. According to the government, the creation of the National Sports Fund will mark a major step toward ensuring financial sustainability and boosting Ghana’s competitiveness across all sporting disciplines.
