Government Moves Escom CEO ‘Kumwenda’ to Teaching Role at MUBAS

The Government of Malawi has moved Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) Chief Executive Officer, Kamkwamba Kumwenda, to the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) on secondment. In an official letter confirmed in a phone interview, Chief Secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet, Justin Saidi, directed Kumwenda to immediately wind up his duties at Escom. The move comes as part of a broader reshuffle in government parastatals following the change of administration since 4 October 2025, when President Lazarus Mutharika was sworn in. Under the new arrangement, Kumwenda will serve as a lecturer at Mubas while remaining an Escom employee, retaining all his employment benefits and entitlements. Kumwenda was appointed CEO of Escom in February 2022, leading the corporation during a period of significant operational and financial challenges.
